Being Safe in Our Community - Reposted

It’s time to remind children about being safe in our community.

It’s a good time for parents to remind children about personal safety.
Here's what children need to know:
Their name, age, telephone number, address, city and province. This can be done through rhyme or song. How to contact their parents at any time, by memorizing cell or work numbers. How and under what circumstances to call 911.To never approach or enter a stranger's vehicle.A responsible adult would never ask a child for directions or any other question for that matter.Make sure they know they have a right to say "no" to an adult, especially when the adult is asking them to do something they have been taught is wrong or feels uncomfortable.Reminding children of this right is important because children are taught from a young age to respect adults. To always tell parents where they will be and to never enter someone's home without their parent's permission. If home alone, never admit it when answering …

Welcome to another eco friendly year at Pine Grove! Our eco club will be meeting regularly on Day 2's during lunch recess to plan another exciting year.

To kick off the school year, we challenge families to take The 31 Day Zero Waste Challenge.

Monday: Zero Waste Tip of the Day: Say No to Straws
57 million plastic straws are used in Canada each day. Here’s the challenge: Next time you’re at a restaurant, order your drink without a straw. You could say. “I would like a soda without a straw. Thank you.”

Tuesday: Zero Waste Tip of the Day: Reusable Water Bottle
In Canada, 65 million water bottles are landfilled each year and only 50% of that 65 million is actually recycled. Here is the challenge: Before you leave your house, make sure you have a reusable bottle with you. Don’t forget!

Wednesday: Zero Waste Tip of the Day: Zero Waste Snack
Most snacks come with a lot of packaging. Think about how all of those tiny packages add up. Here’s the challenge: Instead of buying a prepacka…

Supporting Youth After Tragic Events

In light of the many recent tragic events that have occured in several communities over the past few months, it is worthwhile to recognize how this contributes to our children's stress and mental health and well-being. Below are some tips from YRDSB on how to support children through this.
Tips for Speaking with your Child after a Tragic Event 1. Reassure children that they are safe. Emphasize that schools are very safe. Validate their feelings. Explain that all feelings are okay when a tragedy occurs. Let children talk about their feelings, help put them into perspective, and assist them in expressing these feelings appropriately. 2. Make time to talk. Let their questions be your guide as to how much information to provide. Be patient. Children and youth do not always talk about their feelings readily. Watch for clues that they may want to talk, such as hovering around while you do the dishes or yard work. Some children prefer writing, playing music, or doing an art project as an …
